Advanced Learning Academy/Circulos, Century, Godinez Fundamental High School, and Middle College High School competed in the National Qualifying tournament in Chula Vista the weekend of March 25-26. On day one, all 30 students competed in preliminary rounds to determine who the top students are. 9 of the 30 students broke into the semifinals round. On day two, one duo (2 students) and 7 additional students (totaling 9 students) broke into the semi-final round. After the final round, 5 students (one duo and 3 additional students) have now qualified for the National Tournament in Phoenix. Specifically, Century HS’s DUO team won first place to qualify; a student from Godinez won 3rd place in HI to qualify for Nationals; two students from MCHS won first and second place in POI to qualify for Nationals. Students who did not qualify at this tournament will continue to compete for eligibility at the Last Chance Qualifiers online and each school that competed will also be able to send two students who competed but did not qualify to compete in supplemental events at the National Speech and Debate Association Tournament in Phoenix in June.

East LA District Tournament Results (March 10-11, 2023)

Santa Ana High School competed in their District National Qualifying Tournament in the East LA District. One of the most competitive districts in the country, it is especially hard to qualify students to Nationals. SAHS took ten students and had six advance to semifinals; from those six three advanced to finals, with one qualifying to advance to the National Tournament in June.

OCSL STATE QUALIFIER

OCSL State Qualifier Results (March 4-5, 2023)

SAUSD had 42 students compete in the Orange County Speech League State Qualifiers, representing Godinez Fundamental High School, Middle College High School, and Santa Ana High School. We competed in eleven different speaking events and had thirty-five students make it into the final rounds for ten of the eleven events! We earned twenty-five student qualifier spots in nine different events to compete at the California High School Speech Association State Championships April 21-23 in Carlsbad, CA. In the past, this was not an opportunity that was given to the students district-wide so it is an achievement milestone for district program unity and an opportunity for California State recognition.
